Lightning Horace Clay McQueen

We still have no idea what to name baby Three!  Last night, Hubs and I were chatting and he started looking up baby name websites on his phone.  We scrolled through the top 100 baby names of 2010 (the most recent list) and through the Social Security website listing all baby names in 2010 as well.  While they did give us some ideas, no decision has been made yet.

However, Hubs did tell me the following story, which made me laugh so hard I leapt from the bed (no small feat at 6 months prego) to run to the bathroom before I peed my pants!

He was a real stinker around 8 or 9 years old, a smarty-pants-know-it-all with a sassy mouth.  He was giving his mom a hard time when she told him,

"If you keep this up, I'm going down to the courthouse to get your name changed.  Tomorrow when you go to school, you will have to tell everyone your new name is Horace Clay!"

Poor Hubs was shocked and shaken to his core - that was the worst possible name he'd ever heard or could even imagine!  Whenever he was naughty after that, my mother in law would just call him Horace Clay and he would straighten up.

Well, guess what?  Horace Clay is a real name and there are a bunch of them.  I spent exactly one minute googling the name and I found out he's currently a guy on Facebook, was a horticultural professor at Leeward Community College in Hawaii, was a Korean war veteran survived by his son, Horace Eugene Clay Jr., was a 1970 graduate of Capitol High School in Baton Rouge, LA, and many, many others.

So we're considering naming the baby Horace Clay.

When we asked M and N what we should name the baby, they said,

"Nose,"

"Tree,"

"Chicken Nuggets"

"Lightning McQueen."

They're on the list, too.  What the heck.

The Winner is...

TWIN ENGINES!

Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions - my readers are a very clever bunch.  However, when the last entry, Twin Engines, came in, I knew it was a dead ringer for our family blog because:
  • if we could harness their energy, we really could get a vehicle off the ground
  • we're always moving, even if we're not flying
  • when we do fly, it's almost always on a twin-engine aircraft
  • the boys were dubbed 'righty' and 'lefty' in utero (because they didn't have names!)
  • my mom really wanted that $5 Bed, Bath and Beyond coupon
Thanks, mom.  You've always been great at choosing names!

Blog Naming Contest Update, or, When Geese Attack

PEOPLE!
I was just kidding when I told you to send your entries via homing pigeon.

Apparently, someone thought,
"If homing pigeon is good,
CANADIAN GOOSE
will be better!"

So, while you all were brainstorming brilliant blog names for me on Sunday, hubby and I were swabbing the deck (ahoy, matey!) because a
GIANT
CANADIAN
GOOSE

CRAPPED

on our deck.  The word "poo" does not, cannot, describe what this bird did to our deck during his fly-by.
No, Maverick!
I did not grant your request for a fly-by!

Ugh.
I did not take a photo because it was too. disgusting.

You know what makes this worse?

These creatures are protected in our state!

If I ever find out who sent that goose....I'll sic'em on you!

P.S. The entries are excellent!  Keep them coming...I plan to post a running list on the blog Monday.  And I'm thinking I'll have you all vote beginning Friday.  Fun!

Blog-naming contest!

We need a new name.  aulds world (times two) isn't cutting it anymore.  we'll still keep the same URL - I don't want to mess with that, but I want our last name out of the title.  But I still want the title to reflect US, our (sometimes) world-travelling four pack.

So, a contest!  Woo hoo!

I found this cool looking-into-the-clouds-from-the-inside-of-a-plane background on blogger.  They actually have a lot of options, I discovered, when I clicked on a tiny little button that said "background image."  Imagine!

I think it's very "us," seeing as how our family literally makes a living from this vantage point.

So, what should we call ourselves?  I simply cannot name another thing - coming up with our childrens' names took all my creativity!

The winner receives....(shuffle, shuffle, rummaging in purse)...a diaper? no.  My coupon file?  No way!  A $5 coupon to Bed Bath and Beyond?  Maybe.  How about a pat on the back and pride in knowing a job well done?

Rules and Regulations:
  1. No reference to our names or residence.
  2. All entries must be received via blog or facebook (or email or text or snail mail or homing pigeon) comments by Thursday, July 29, 10:00pm Central Standard time.
  3. Winner will be announced...whenever I feel like it.  I'm not gonna make any promises!

Mother's Intuition

Do you believe in Mother's/Father's Intuition? Give some examples.

Yes! Yes, I do!

My mother's intuition kicked in early in our pregnancy.  When we found out we were having twins at 6 weeks, we immediately began brainstorming names for the babies.  Steve and I agreed quickly on two girls' names, and I said, "You know we'll have two boys - that's why we can't agree on names!"  Deep in my heart, I knew there were two boys in there early in the first trimester.

At twelve weeks, we heard the babies' heartbeats for the first time.  The actual numbers elude me now, but one heartbeat was slower and the other faster.  It didn't faze me until I told this to some people (you know who you are *cough*momandmotherinlaw*cough*) who convinced me that the fast heartbeat was a boy and the slow one was a girl.  It happened again at our sixteen weeks' appointment: one fast and one slow.  I was swayed a bit and began to think I was having one of each, but I KNEW there was AT LEAST one boy in there.  There was no way it was two girls.

And sure enough, at our twenty weeks' ultrasound appointment, we learned we were having TWO BOYS!  We just HAD to find out - especially since we'd been calling the babies 'Righty' and 'Lefty.' Even though we told everyone we were having boys, we wouldn't tell the names - not because we were being coy, but because we just couldn't decide!

So yes, I believe in mother's intuition.  Matthew and Nathan will be 10 months old this week, so I don't have a lot of stories, but I CAN tell if the cry means hunger, dirty diaper, or a binky tossed from the crib.  I also know if the silence is playing with toys or playing with the kitchen trash.  So I think my mother's intuition is getting better!

Here's Matthew sucking on his blue bink and stealing Nathan's green on right off his shirt yesterday!

Question of the Week: Names

Today I'm going to participate in Multiples and More's Question of the Week: How Did You Name Your Multiples? It was originally posted Thursday, October 8, 2009, when the boys were just 4 months old.  Enjoy!

What's in a name?

Naming our boys was a very difficult task for us.  In fact, we easily chose 2 girls' names when we discovered we were expecting twins, but couldn't find even one boy's name that we liked.  I joked (but suspected) that we'd have boys because we couldn't think of a single name, so we tabled the discussion and 'named' them Righty and Lefty.  Sure enough, at our 20 week ultrasound, we learned that we were carrying two boys!  That was in February.  We spent the next three months thinking, talking, and praying about their names.  It's a big deal, and difficult when you, meaning me, have a long list of names you WON'T name your children: a) no ex-boyfriends b)no irritating students c)no first names already in the families d)nothing trendy.  We sat on the couch one night and flipped through a baby names book, each of us making a list of names that we liked.  When we were finished, we compared our lists and kept the names that we'd both noted.  There were about 6 names we'd both written down that met the above criteria.  Then we checked our names on the Social Security website, to see how popular the names were for babies last year.  Nathan's name came in at #66.  We decided that there probably won't be as many Nathans in his life to share his name as Matthew might have (his was #6), so that was another plus.  And we just liked the sound of it.  Oh, and it had to be Biblical, too.  See how hard we made it?

The middle name was easy: we'd already decided to use great-grandfathers' names for both boys.  We couldn't very well name one of them after Steve and the other after me!  So Nathan got John, his paternal great-grandfather's name, simply because we didn't want to give Matthew half of the Gospels!

After we'd chosen the names, I discovered that Nathan is VERY popular!  In my MVMOM's subgroup, Moms and Muffins, consisting of JUST the pregnant women and moms with babies under age 1, there are THREE other Nathans that I know of!  And a dear old friend with whom I've made contact again has a two-year old Nathan as well.  Wow!

Today is the day I just couldn't believe my eyes, though.  On the Today Show, they featured a couple who gave birth to identical triplet boys on Sept. 30.  They were making a big deal about it because it was the couple's third anniversary, 3 boys, on the 30th, and the odds of having identical triplets are about one in two million (not three?). I was amazed for a different reason: the boys are named MATTHEW, NATHAN, and Michael!  Wonder how long it took them to come up with those names?

And what about Matthew Wilfred?  Since we'd decided to name them after their great-grandfathers, and we wanted to use my grandpa Perry's name, we could choose Wilfred or Perry.  I like the name Perry.  In fact, I know my other siblings do, too, but no one has used it yet.  I just didn't want Matthew to spend the rest of his life explaining that he's NOT named after the Friends actor Matthew Perry!  So that's how they became Matthew Wilfred and Nathan John.
Others have asked how we knew to name which one.  We started trying out the names when we talked to them in my belly.  For whatever reason, Lefty became Matthew quickly.  Righty, who eventually became Nathan, tried out several names for awhile.  Nothing quite fit until we tried out Nathan.

I suppose there are other ways to do it.  My friend A decided to let her husband name their girl twin and she named their boy, but he told her he was going to name her Cinnamon or Sparkle.  So my poor friend A was drugged beyond belief in the operating room and says the doctors held up her girl and asked what her name was, and A said, "Cinnamon Sparkle!"  Thank goodness her daddy came to rescue with a more respectable name just then! And thank goodness it wasn't MY husband who came up with that idea!
